Scripture Ornaments of Faith
A Caregiver’s Christmas Story
The soft glow of the Christmas tree lights shimmered across the living room, casting warm reflections on the windowpane. Ruth, a gentle caregiver with kind eyes and a heart full of patience, sat beside her client, Mrs. Emerson, who was nestled in her favorite armchair with a blanket tucked around her legs.
“It’s a lovely tree,” Mrs. Emerson said, gazing at the ornaments that glistened like tiny stars.
Ruth smiled. “It reminds me of my favorite Christmas when I was little. My mother had a tradition—she would decorate our tree with white ribbons that had Bible verses written on them. Each one told the story of why we truly celebrate Christmas.”
Mrs. Emerson’s face brightened with curiosity. “That sounds beautiful. What kind of verses did she choose?”
“Oh, all the ones that reminded us of God’s love,” Ruth said softly. “Verses like Isaiah 9:6 — ‘For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given.’ She said the white ribbons were to remind us of purity and the gift of Jesus. Every year, she’d read a verse aloud as she tied each ribbon on the tree, and by the time we finished, the whole room felt… peaceful. Holy, almost.”
The two women sat quietly for a moment, letting the memory hang in the air like a snowflake caught in light.
“That’s a wonderful tradition,” Mrs. Emerson whispered.
Ruth nodded. “It really was. I think that’s why I love ornaments with Scripture on them—they carry that same reminder. Christmas isn’t just about the lights or the gifts—it’s about remembering the greatest gift of all.”
She reached for a small box beside her and carefully opened it to reveal a delicate ceramic ornament. The glossy surface reflected the light, and on one side, the words ‘Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men’ were beautifully inscribed.
Mrs. Emerson smiled, her eyes glistening. “It’s perfect,” she said.
And as Ruth gently hung the ornament on the tree, the room once again felt wrapped in that same peace her mother had spoken of so many years ago.
