3🤦moments

Caring for others often times comes with these moments. I like to refer to them as the OMG moments. These mostly come from times when Clients have surprised me even when nothing at this point should. I’ve seen a lot and heard a lot so lets discuss it.

Moment #1 Lets sing that song again.

Dementia and Alzheimer’s are often dealt with in my line of work. Repeat, Repeat, Repeat. There are days when I have sat and sang the same song over and over and over with clients because it is comforting to them. Don’t get me wrong I love what I do and wouldn’t trade it for anything, but Can I just be real for a moment though? I often do get the “not again” feeling and as always I will with a smile go along with it because my purpose is to see them happy and smiling bringing whatever little bit of joy I can into their lives. What are some of your repeat moments?

Moment #2 Fingers crossed I don’t get Peed on!

Okay I get that this often happens as most of the clients I deal with have incontinence issues and often cannot control their bladders. One of the things I often encounter is as they are getting up from the toilet in the standing position, they will begin to urinate again all over the floor, their pants, and shoes and anything in the way. My shoes have become victim to this on a few occasions, but hey I get a new pair of shoes after so focusing on the upside makes it better because who doesn’t like a new pair of shoes? Read blog 3 for tricks to help prevent these issues.

Moment #3 Please don’t CHEW your medicine!

What does that even mean you ask? One of the hardest things I have dealt with on a regular basis is getting clients who have memory issues to understand the importance of taking their med’s and also swallowing them. Having clients who cannot follow directions because they don’t remember how to do something or are in a freeze state and unable to do what they are being told can be frustrating for both the client and the caregiver. IT IS FRUSTRATING AND HEARTBREAKING! Sometimes you can only do what you can do to make sure they are getting the medications they need down. Please take another sip of water to get it to go down. Or after its been in the mouth for a few minutes it is then spit out because they never swallowed it and had it hiding in their mouth. What troubles have you encountered with this? Read Blog 4 for some helpful ways to avoid these.
