The Medicine Debacle!
If you have an elderly loved one you help take care of, getting the medicine down can be one of the harder tasks you may encounter. Oral medications can be one of the most difficult tasks for patients depending on the situation. The things that have worked in my experience are as follows:
Put it in the pudding! I have often times just put it in a food they like. Not mixing it in a whole lot but about a teaspoon size bite. Examples would be apple sauce, pudding, ice cream, or anything soft which might make it easier for them to swallow.
Make it a game for them so they think it is fun and not a chore. This can help by avoiding anxious or nervous feelings making it more comfortable for them. A calm environment will help greatly as they can sometimes sense your feelings. An example would be to use a piece of candy with a similar color and show them how to take it by example.
Have you had experience with this? What other recommendations do you suggest to help others?
