Memory-Based Activities🖼
Memory loss is one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s and dementia, but engaging patients in activities that tap into their long-term memory can help foster a sense of connection to their past.
Photo Albums & Memory Boxes: Create a scrapbook or memory box filled with photographs, keepsakes, and mementos. Browse through the album together, talking about the people and events depicted. This can stimulate conversation and bring back memories, providing a sense of familiarity.
Reminiscence Therapy: Encourage the patient to share stories from their past. You can use prompts like "What was your favorite childhood activity?" or "Tell me about your first job." Even if they can’t recall specific details, simply talking and sharing stories can provide comfort and emotional connection.
Music Therapy: Music has a powerful connection to memory and emotion. Play songs from the person’s past—perhaps their favorite tunes from childhood, young adulthood, or key life events. Singing along or tapping to the beat can also help trigger positive memories.
Have you tried any of these yet? Which ones did you find worked best? See you soon and don’t forget your smile!
